Some of you already have heard me raving about this new memory card. Well, today I ordered it, so we’ll soon see if it lives up to its mythical claims. I’ve been using a new CF card adapter for a couple of weeks now in my Nikon D200. This lets you use an SD card in the CF card slot! It works flawlessly. Now I’ll be able to magically send photos as I take them to flickr and my Mac wirelessly. How cool it that? $69.95 worth of coolness! I’ll post a review soon after it arrives!
Jobs: Perhaps Adobe should…
“Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot,” writes Steve Jobs in a rare open letter posted at Apple.com.
Jobs makes his case for why Apple refuses to let Flash onto it’s touch devices. There’s more. Battery life, lock-step with cross-platform compatibility, crash prone and proprietary. Bottom line, Flash is not the panacea techies would have you think.
Steve continues, “Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?”
My take: Some have accused me of being follower of Steve Jobs. Well, if he didn’t make so much damn sense all the time, I wouldn’t be such a fan. The thing is, this guy is the leading visionary on the planet. Lead on, Steve!
Honestly, I’m not missing Flash one bit.
New Eye-Fi card to sync with iPhoto
“Their new device, the Eye-Fi Geo X2, will only be sold at Apple Stores starting in May. It brings faster uploads of photos and video (via a new 802.11n transmitter) directly to iPhoto and MobileMe (Picasa, Facebook, and 20+ others). Its capacity is 4GB,” writes Dave Caolo for TUAW.
My take: I’ve been “eyeing” this as an option to wirelessly move images from my camera to my computer. Eye-Fi has been around for while. The reviews I’ve read before said it is a slow and painful process. However, this is supposed to solve the speed issues with 801.11n. This could be a nice workflow. The issue is, my Nikon D200 DSLR uses the Compact Flash format. But there are solutions. In fact, I just ordered this adapter from Amazon for less than $20!
Dave continues, “One cool new feature is what they’re calling Endless Memory, which allows users to have Eye-Fi automatically make space available on the card after photos and videos have been safely uploaded. Neat! It also does automatic geotagging so your shots will show up in iPhoto’s “Places” feature with no problem.”

The iPad stands alone
Free iPad Wallpaper!
I shot an iPad wallpaper this afternoon. I haven’t shown Jen yet. I think she is going to prefer a pic of the kids instead! BTW, to do a screenshot on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, click the home button and the power button simultaneously!
If you like my background, feel free to go download it!
Day Two with the iPad
It’s a gorgeous design. Today we’ve been putting the device through its paces. Typing is much easier than on the iPhone.
I watched a new episode of Stargate Universe this afternoon. I used my Bose headphones and the audio was great. It did get a bit taxing holding the iPad at an angle. We need to invest in a stand. Overall, the experience was pleasing ~ no heat, and very little battery usage.
This morning, I nixed most of my old iPhone apps from the iPad. Some are not appropriate, others just look terrible at the 2x resolution.
Some iPhone games make the jump to iPad just fine. For example, Tetris is a blast. A couple of the racing apps run fine on the bigger display.
When my 3G version arrives, I can see it will be a constant companion, not a replacement for my laptop, but to augment. I can imagine using it while at work to stay on top of my email, take notes at meetings and listening to media. Heck it may be a multimedia picture frame on my desk!
Finally, I’m posting this from the iPad ~ turns out it’s great for blogging too!
iPad: First Impressions
The UPS guy drove up around 2 p.m. My wife was busy preparing a late lunch and besides, she doesn’t get as excited about gear. Regardless, she was excited after I showed her the iPad. Her birthday is next month, but this is her present (at least part of it).
It’s heavier than I thought it would feel. But not too heavy. It took forever to upload all my apps to the device. Then, I realized I had way too many apps! I had to go in adjust fire. The key is not letting your iPad specific apps get lost in the clutter.
There is a huge difference between apps that are designed for the iPhone and those for the iPad. The iPhone apps looks out of place in this big display. I’m sure the iPad apps will catch up in the near future, but I don’t plan on using many of my old iPhone apps on the new device. Apps need to be specifically designed for all the new real estate. You can double the size to fill the screen, but it looks very low-rez!
Small thing, but as my wife if from Korea and sends a lot of emails back to her family in Seoul, it would be nice to get Korean language as an option on the iPad. We have it on the iPhone and iPod touch, you’d think if iPad can do Chinese, it should at least be able to handle the 24 letters in the Korean alphabet! Again, I’m sure that will be in a future software update. We need it Apple!
The Popular Science magazine is incredible! What a great future digital magazines will have in this realm. I cannot wait to see more like this.
My wife watched an episode of Modern Family using the ABC app. She loved it! Actually, she is very excited about her new toy. She started reading a book. It’ll be very handy for her to double tap a word and choose dictionary. As she reads in her second language, she always turns to the dictionary. The iBooks reader app will be a great help to her.
I’ll have more observations later. Bottom line: We are happy with the iPad. I cannot wait for my 3G version to arrive later this month!

The Traveler — iPad Felt Folio Leather Case
“For the iPad user on the go, the Traveler offers the best of both worlds – convenience and durability. The Travelor iPad case is a felt folio that folds out to include storage pockets for pens, business cards, whatever you may need on the go. The premium leather accents highlight the quality and utility of this iPad cover while keeping your iPad safe and secure with magnetic closures,” according to Case-mate.
Dave’s Take: For $50, this is the best deal I’ve seen yet for an iPad specific case. I ordered it (free shipping too). This will slip nicely into my camera backpack and be a sleek and useful addition for meetings and work. I’m still wondering if this will be a complete solution for watching videos in landscape mode. But I think I’ll be able to “A-Frame it” and use it as a standalone video viewer. We’ll see. My wife’s iPad will arrive today. Mine will arrive when Apple releases the 3G version later this month. I’ll post a review and photos after the Case-mate arrives.
