Joel Levine: Why we need to go back to Mars

31 Mar

Dave’s Take: When I was a kid, I clipped all Mars news and posted it to a scrapbook. The Viking mission in 1976 was exciting. I’m sure humans will walk the face of the planet during my lifetime (I have a very long life planned)! This guy is a visionary. Let’s listen to him and go to Mars!

Coming soon ~ hey Mikey!

26 Mar
New Mikey!

Well, I suppose you have to be old enough to remember the Life cereal commercial to appreciate that headline!

The all-new Mikey is the perfect tool for mobile recording,” according to the salespeople at Blue Mic. “Featuring two custom-tuned Blue capsules for stereo recording, a line-input, USB pass through and a stylish updated 230-degree rotating design.”

For less than $100 you get a pro mic that would work well in the field. I can also imagine capturing my kids singing, recording lectures and presentations, podcasting and interviews.

Blue Mic continues: “Mikey’s three gain settings allow for a versatile recording experience for everything from a loud concert to a whisper. Record lectures, voice notes, live music, interviews, and more. Mikey also comes with its own carrying pouch and headphone adapter for playback and monitoring. Mikey turns your iPod or iPhone into the coolest mobile recording device around!”

Will it work with my shiny new iPad? It should. It takes a 30-pin connector to plug in to your iPhone or iPod Touch and turn it into a mini-pro studio. I already put down $9.99 for the Blue Mic iPhone app.  It works very well. Check out this site for sample videos.

Great! Where can I order? Well, it’s not where, it’s when. Spring 2010. Hey, it’s Spring already! Yeah, that’s what I said. Patience is a virtue, just not my virtue.

More about the all-new Mikey…

Painting with Light

Painting with Light
I found a very simple tutorial in “Digital Photo” (The UK’s best-selling imaging magazine). This is the result of five shots on a tripod at four seconds exposure, ƒ18. I aimed the flashlight at different angles for three exposures ~ poured more ginger ale in one and moved the bare bulb of the flashlight in a spiral for the final. Then layered in photoshop with the blend mode set to “lighten.” Shockingly simple to do! I’m going to have fun trying this again this weekend!
